Black Mesa is Crowbar Collective's ground up reimagining of Half-Life on the Source engine, rebuilt across fifteen years of development and finished with the Definitive Edition update. The campaign runs nineteen chapters as Gordon Freeman, from the resonance cascade through the desert surface levels to an entirely reworked Xen. Alongside it sits a multiplayer deathmatch component with twelve maps drawn from the Half-Life universe, including Crossfire, Stalkyard, Gasworks, Undertow, Bounce and Lambda Bunker.
Every Game Host Bros Black Mesa server comes with SourceCoop, the community co-op mod, installed and kept up to date. Start your server on the first campaign map and you and your friends play through the story together, from the tram ride into Black Mesa to the final fight in Xen, with checkpoints, revives and votes to skip the intro or change chapter. Start it on a deathmatch map and it runs deathmatch instead.
Black Mesa deathmatch is a pick up and play mode, which means it only works when there is a server sitting there ready. Hosting your own keeps a room open for a group of friends or a small community, with the map cycle, slot count, round timing and admin rules under your control, and custom maps installed on the server so everyone downloads the same rotation. Because it is a Source engine game it is light on resources, so a permanent server for a regular crowd costs very little to keep running.
Game Host Bros will run Black Mesa on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X processors with NVMe storage, which is comfortably more than a Source dedicated server needs and leaves plenty of room for custom maps and plugins. Black Mesa is sold on Steam for Windows and Linux, with crossplay between the two. It ships with the Black Mesa Source SDK, so mappers and modders can build new content and publish it to the Steam Workshop, and server operators can install those maps and models directly. Standard Source server tools apply, including console commands, RCON and configuration files for every gameplay setting.
