Empires is a free Source engine game that mixes a first-person shooter with real-time strategy. Two factions, the Northern Faction and the Brenodi Empire, fight over large maps. One player on each team takes the commander's seat and plays from above, choosing research, placing barracks, refineries and turrets, and giving orders, while everyone else fights on the ground as one of four infantry classes or drives tanks and APCs they design themselves. A good commander and a team that follows the plan beat a team of lone heroes every time.

Matches are long, team-based battles where resources, research and teamwork decide the winner, so they run best on a server that stays online.
