Ylands is a free to play low poly sandbox adventure from Bohemia Interactive, the Czech studio behind Arma and DayZ. You gather resources, craft tools, weapons, clothing and workstations, build a home wherever you fancy, then construct a ship and sail between islands across six regions with their own wildlife and materials. Caves are guarded and enemies vary by location and time of day, so exploring properly means preparing first. Alongside the main Adventure mode there is Creative mode, an Editor for building blueprints and scenarios, and Community Games made by other players.

Ylands rewards the sort of long term settlement that a peer-to-peer session cannot really support. On a dedicated server the islands you have cleared, the home you have furnished and the ship in the harbour are all still there next week, and friends can carry on exploring while you are away. Creators get something extra from it too, because a scenario built in the Editor needs somewhere permanent to run if other people are going to play it.
