How To Install Mods On Your Abiotic Factor Server - mod.io & UE4SS Mods Guide

If you're looking to mod your Abiotic Factor server, here's how to do it. Abiotic Factor has official mod support through mod.io. You add a mod to your server with its mod.io ID, and the server downloads it when it starts.

Adding A Token

We recommend adding a mod.io token. With one, your server keeps its mods between restarts and downloads each mod's dependencies for you. Without one, it downloads its mods again every time it starts.

  1. Log in to mod.io and go to your profile's Access page.
  2. Create a new personal access token and copy it.
  3. Log in to Bropanel and select your server.
  4. In the sidebar, go to Settings.
  5. Under Modding, paste your token into mod.io Token.
  6. Click Save & Restart to apply your changes.

Keep your token private.

Installing Mods

  1. Find the mod on mod.io and click Copy mod ID on the mod's page.
  2. Log in to Bropanel and select your server.
  3. In the sidebar, go to Settings.
  4. Under Modding, paste the ID into Mod IDs. To add more than one mod, separate the IDs with semicolons:
    6411576;6472275;6472552

  5. Click Save & Restart to apply your changes.

The Console shows the server downloading your mods while it starts. When players join, the game asks them to download your server's mods with one click.

Here are some things to consider before installing mods.

  • If a mod lists other mods under Dependencies on its page, add their IDs too, unless you've added a mod.io token.

  • Many common tweaks, like stack size, XP gain, item weight and enemy spawns, are already in your server's settings, so you may not need a mod at all.

  • Game updates turn off mods until their authors update them. If your server won't start after a game update, remove that mod's ID from Mod IDs until it's updated.

Manually Installing Mods

You can also upload mods to your server yourself instead of having it download them from mod.io.

  1. Download the mod's Windows Server file from its mod.io page and extract it on your PC.
  2. Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  3. In the sidebar, go to Files and create the folder AbioticFactor/Mods/<mod ID>/.
  4. Upload the extracted files into it.
  5. In the sidebar, go to Settings. Under Modding, add the ID to Mod IDs and turn on Enable Sideloaded Mods.
  6. Click Save & Restart to apply your changes.

  • The folder's name must be the mod's ID, or your server won't start.

  • With Enable Sideloaded Mods on, every mod in Mod IDs loads from the Mods folder and nothing downloads from mod.io, so upload every mod you want to use.

Troubleshooting Mods

If the game won't let you join your server because it has mods enabled, you haven't agreed to the mod.io terms yet.

  1. Open Abiotic Factor.
  2. Click Mods on the main menu.
  3. Agree to the mod.io terms of service.
  4. Join your server again.

Legacy UE4SS Modding

Before official mods, Abiotic Factor was modded with UE4SS (Lua) mods and pak mods from Nexus Mods. These still load, but the developers don't support them and expect most of them to break after the v1.5.0 Modding Update, so only use one if its page says it works with the current version of the game.

  • UE4SS (Lua) mods change how the game plays, like loot, enemy spawns or admin tools. Some of them only need to be on the server, so your players don't have to install anything. Check the mod's page for "server side" or "dedicated server" support.
  • Pak mods (.pak, .ucas and .utoc files) add or replace items, models and textures. Every player has to install the same files on their own PC, so they aren't server-only. Console players can't install these, so stick to server-side mods if they play on your server.

Only install one unofficial mod at a time and test it to make sure it works. If it doesn't, remove its files from your server.

Installing UE4SS

UE4SS is the mod loader that every Lua mod needs. Dedicated servers load it through version.dll, not the dwmapi.dll that's included in the main download.

  1. Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  2. Download the main file of UE4SS for Abiotic Factor from Nexus Mods, and also download version.dll from its Optional Files.
  3. Extract the downloaded .zip file on your PC.
  4. Upload the ue4ss folder and version.dll to AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/. You don't need dwmapi.dll, as it only works on PC.
  5. Start your server.

If installed correctly, you should see a UE4SS.log file created in the AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss folder after starting your server.

Installing Lua Mods

  1. Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  2. Download the mod you want from Nexus Mods. (Make sure it's a server-side mod!)
  3. Extract the downloaded .zip file on your PC.
  4. Upload the mod's folder to AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/, even if the mod's page names a different folder.
  5. Open AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods/mods.txt and add a new line at the bottom with the mod's folder name, followed by : 1:
    UploadedMod : 1

  6. Start your server.

To check that your mod loaded, open AbioticFactor/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/UE4SS.log and look for a line like Starting Lua mod 'UploadedMod'.
