How to Upload an Existing Save to Your Project Zomboid Server

This guide will show you how to upload an existing world to your Project Zomboid server and rename it so the server loads it.

If you get stuck at any time, Game Host Bros offers free world transfers. Just reach out to a bro on Discord.

Danger

This will delete or overwrite any progress you have made on the server.

Note

Project Zomboid names your save after the server it was created on, so your local save carries that name while your Game Host Bros server uses pzserver. Renaming your upload to pzserver means everything keeps working with your server's existing settings.

Migrating From Another Server

If you already have a Project Zomboid server with another provider, then this is how you migrate your existing save to Game Host Bros. Unlike a local save, a server save also has config files in the Server folder and a player database in db.

  1. 1

On your previous server, navigate to Saves/Multiplayer/ and back up your save folder.

  2. 2

Navigate to Server/ and back up every file that starts with your save name. There are usually four: the .ini plus three .lua files.

  3. 3

Navigate to db/ and back up savename.db.

    db
    savename.dbYour player database.
    Saves
    Multiplayer
    savenameYour world save.
    Server
    savename.ini
    savename_SandboxVars.lua
    savename_spawnpoints.lua
    savename_spawnregions.lua
  4. 4

Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.

  5. 5

In the sidebar, go to Files.

  6. 6

Navigate to .cache/Saves/Multiplayer/, delete the pzserver folder, then upload your save folder and rename it to pzserver.

  7. 7

Navigate to .cache/Server/, upload your .ini and .lua files, and rename each one so it starts with pzserver.

  8. 8

Navigate to .cache/db/, upload savename.db, and rename it to pzserver.db.

  9. 9

Convert your player data, following the section below.

  10. 10

    Start your server.

This is what your server should now look like:

.cache
db
pzserver.dbYour player database, renamed.
Saves
Multiplayer
pzserverYour uploaded save, renamed.
Server
pzserver.ini
pzserver_SandboxVars.lua
pzserver_spawnpoints.lua
pzserver_spawnregions.lua

Converting Your Server Player Data

Renaming the folder does not move your characters across. Each character in players.db records the save name it belongs to, so it still points at savename and your server will not find it.

  1. 2
Load the players.db from the save folder you copied as the original file.
  2. 3
Enter pzserver as the new save name.
  3. 4
Click Convert and download the file.
  4. 5
Upload it to .cache/Saves/Multiplayer/pzserver, replacing the players.db already there.

Uploading Your Local Save To The Server

The folder gets renamed to pzserver so it matches the save name your server already uses.

  1. 1
    Press Windows Key + R.
  2. 2
    Enter this and click OK:
    %userprofile%\Zomboid

  3. 3
Open Saves/Multiplayer and copy the folder for the world you want to upload, for example savename.
  4. 4
Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  5. 5
In the sidebar, go to Files and navigate to .cache/Saves/Multiplayer.
  6. 6
Delete the existing pzserver folder, then upload your savename folder.
  7. 7
Rename the uploaded folder to pzserver.
  8. 8
Convert your player data, following the section below.
  9. 9
    Start your server.

This is what your server should now look like:

.cache
Saves
Multiplayer
pzserverYour uploaded save, renamed.

Converting Your Local Player Data

Single player stores characters in a different table from multiplayer, so your character has to be written into the server's own players.db rather than renamed.

  1. 1
Join your server once so it creates a character for your account, then Stop the server and download players.db from .cache/Saves/Multiplayer/pzserver.
  2. 3
Load your single player players.db as the original file.
  3. 4
Load the server's players.db as the second file.
  4. 5
Enter the account username you log in to the server with, and pzserver as the save name.
  5. 6
Click Convert and download the file.
  6. 7
Upload it to .cache/Saves/Multiplayer/pzserver, replacing the players.db already there.
