How To Connect To Your Subnautica Server

Subnautica has no multiplayer of its own, so your server runs Nitrox, the community multiplayer mod. Everyone who joins needs two things:

You needDetails
Subnautica for PCThe current version, from Steam or the Epic Games Store. The Nitrox launcher won't start an older version of the game. The Microsoft Store version needs extra setup before Nitrox can use it; the Nitrox Discord has the steps. Console versions can't join.
The Nitrox launcherThe same Nitrox version as your server, for Windows or Linux. Your server runs the newest release unless you set a Nitrox Version.

Tip

Your server shows its Nitrox version in the Console when it starts, for example Starting Nitrox Server V1.8.1.0 for Subnautica.

Installing Nitrox

  1. 1
Download the Nitrox launcher from nitrox.rux.gg and unzip it. For an older release, such as the one set as your server's Nitrox Version, download it from the Nitrox releases page instead: the win_x64 zip for Windows or the linux_x64 zip for Linux.
  2. 2
Open Nitrox.Launcher. On Linux, follow Nitrox on Linux for this step.
  3. 3
The launcher finds your Subnautica install on its own. If it picks the wrong one, choose it under Options > Subnautica Installation.

The launcher runs on Microsoft's .NET 9. On Windows, if it says .NET is missing, install the .NET 9 runtime and open the launcher again.

Nitrox on Linux

Most Linux systems don't come with .NET 9, so install it before you open the launcher.

  1. 1
Install the .NET 9 runtime from your distribution's packages, such as dotnet-runtime-9.0, or with Microsoft's install script: ./dotnet-install.sh --channel 9.0 --runtime dotnet.
  2. 2
Open a terminal in the launcher's folder and run dotnet Nitrox.Launcher.dll, or ~/.dotnet/dotnet Nitrox.Launcher.dll if you used the install script.

Joining Your Server

  1. 1
Log in to Bropanel and select your Subnautica server.
  2. 2
Copy the server IP address and port from the Overview page, for example 123.45.67.89:11000.
  3. 3
In the Nitrox launcher, click PLAY MULTIPLAYER.
  4. 4
In Subnautica's main menu, open Multiplayer and click Add Server.
  5. 5
Enter any name, your server's IP address as Host and its port as Port, then click Create server.
  6. 6
Click your server in the list, shown as Connect to and its name. If you set a server password, enter it when asked.
  7. 7
Enter your player name, pick a color and click Join. Names are 3 to 25 characters long and can use letters, numbers, _, . and -, but no spaces.

Use the same player name every time you join. Your server remembers each player by name, along with their inventory and where they were.

Version Errors

If joining fails with Your Nitrox installation is out of date or The server runs an older version of Nitrox, your Nitrox version doesn't match the server's. The error shows the server's release after Server:. Download that release from nitrox.rux.gg, or from the Nitrox releases page if it's an older one. You can also set your server's Nitrox Version to the release your group uses.

If the launcher says Outdated Game Detected, your copy of Subnautica is older than Nitrox supports. Update Subnautica in Steam or the Epic Games Launcher, then click PLAY MULTIPLAYER again.
