How To Connect To Your Quake 4 Server

Here is how you can join your Quake 4 dedicated server. Your server runs Quake 4 version 1.4.2, the final patch, so players need Quake 4 patched to 1.4.2. The Steam version is already up to date. If you have the original discs, install the 1.4.2 patch before you join.

Tip

If a player is missing a custom map or mod your server uses, the game can download it from your server when they join.

Connecting From the Server Browser

id Software's own master server no longer sends out the server list, so the in-game browser is empty until you point it at the QuakeHub master server, which lists your server. You only need to do this once.

  1. 1
Open your Quake 4 folder and go to q4base. On Steam, right-click Quake 4 in your library and pick Manage and then Browse local files.
  2. 2
Create a text file named autoexec.cfg in q4base with this line, then save it: seta net_master0 "master.quakehub.net"
  3. 3
Open Quake 4 and go to Multiplayer.
  4. 4
Open the server browser and refresh the internet server list.
  5. 5
Find your server name in the list. Click a column header to sort if the list is long.
  6. 6
Double-click your server to join. If you set a server password, enter it when asked.

Note

It can take a few minutes for a new server to appear in the list after it starts. Joining by IP always works.

Connecting With the IP Address

  1. 1
Log in to Bropanel and select your Quake 4 server.
  2. 2
Copy the server IP address and port from the Overview page, for example 123.45.67.89:28004.
  3. 3
Open Quake 4 and press Ctrl, Alt and ~ together to open the console.
  4. 4
Type connect 123.45.67.89:28004 with your own IP and port, then press Enter.
