How To Add Custom Maps And Mods To Your Quake 4 Server

Custom maps for Quake 4 come as .pk4 files, and mods come as a folder of their own. Here's how to add them to your server, and how to add server settings that aren't in Bropanel.

Uploading Custom Maps

  1. 1
Download the map and unzip it on your computer if it came in a .zip. You need the .pk4 file inside.
  2. 2
Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  3. 3
In the sidebar, go to Files.
  4. 4
    Navigate to q4base/.
  5. 5
    Upload the .pk4 file.
  6. 6
    Start your server.

To play a custom map, enter its path in Map or Map Rotation, for example mp/mymap. The map's readme usually tells you the path. Players who don't have the map can download it from your server when they join, see Downloads.

Running A Mod

  1. 1
Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  2. 2
In the sidebar, go to Files.
  3. 3
Upload the mod's folder, for example q4max, to the root of your server, next to q4base.
  4. 4
In the sidebar, go to Settings.
  5. 5
Under Modding, edit Mod and enter the mod's folder name, for example q4max.
  6. 6
Click Save & Restart to apply your changes.

Players need the same mod to join. To go back to the standard game, clear the Mod field and click Save & Restart.

Caution

The mod needs a Linux version of its server files. A mod made only for Windows won't start, and the Console shows an error.

Adding Your Own Server Settings

  1. 1
Log in to Bropanel and Stop your server.
  2. 2
In the sidebar, go to Files.
  3. 3
    Open q4base/server.cfg.
  4. 4
Add your settings, one per line, for example set si_countdown 5, then save the file.
  5. 5
    Start your server.

Caution

server.cfg runs before the settings from Bropanel, so for options that are in Settings, like the server name, passwords, game type, map and limits, the Bropanel setting wins. Change those in Settings instead.
